Using a Monopod When I pack my bags for a shoot I am faced with which of my three tripods to take. I can take my 055 Manfrotto with the three way head, the lighter 190 with the large ballhead or the smaller Gitzo Reporter. They all offer great stability and have different heads installed for different types of shooting but the support that I enjoy using the most is my trusty monopod.
Besides offering a stable base to rest a camera, monopods can be used in creative ways. They enable a photographer to have the stability and the portability all wrapped in to one. Carrying a tripod slows you down, but with a small monopod you can really move around. Besides the eye-level shooting which is typical of monopod shooting, using the monopod as a remote arm gives you angles and possibilities that are literally beyond the reach of most photographers. The technique is simple, put the camera on the monopod, connect a cable or remote release, hold it above your subject and start shooting. You will need to prefocus or use auto focus to make sure your subject is sharp. Try and set a fast shutter spped to avoid th ecamera shake that will happen when it starts to sway. |
